Sleek and Modern Design

At a glance the BYD Dolphin's front end gives a resemblance to the real Dolphin which is smiling :). The Headlights and rear lights are inspired by ocean. Overall the BYD Dolphin has a sleek design that gives better aerodynamics and maximized range. The design of the BYD Dolphin are based on the new design concept named by BYD the "Ocean Aesthetics" which is a mixture of fine lines and flowing contours, resulting in an elegant appearance. Even the interior design follows the simplistic design with all modern features. The BYD Dolphin comes with dual tone colour scheme that reflects a Dolphin swimming out of the surface of the ocean. On top of this the wheels do get a bit of colour of the main body colour, its quite eye catching. The BYD Dolphin looks small in the pictures however its a 4.2 meter long, 1.57 meter tall and 2 meter wide car. Overall the BYD Dolphin is sleek yet modern withe a good road presence car.

Performance

The BYD Dolphin comes with different type of motor output version based on variants. The base variant Active is equipped with 93 bhp/ 180 Nm, Boost with 130 bhp/ 260 Nm, Comfort and Design with 201 bhp/310 Nm output from single motor.The Active & Boost variants are equipped with small battery capacity of 45 kWh whereas Comfort & Design variants are equipped with large battery capacity of 60 kWh. Thats why the BYD Dolphin's variants have different km range, charging times, power output and 0 to 100 kmph times as well. The BYD Dolphin variants Active/Boost/Comfort/Design can go from 0 to 100 kmph in 12.3s/7.5s/7s/7s respctively. The BYD Dolphin have a top speed of 160 kmph which is enough for this size of car. Overall the performance of the BYD Dolphin is quite decent and good for city drive. One can choose long or short range variants of the BYD Dolphin as per the requirement.

Range and Charging

The BYD Dolphin comes with different range due to the long and short range battery packs. The BYD Dolphin's Active/Boost/Comfort/Design are able to drive for a km range of 340 km/315 km/427 km/427 km respectively on a single charge. The BYD Dolphin's battery packs are equipped with the BYD's famous and efficient blade cell technology used in all the models such as BYD U9! The charging times of the variants of BYD Dolphin Active/Boost/Comfort/Design variants are on DC chargers are 38 min/38 min/ 40 min/ 40 min for charging the battery from 10% to 80%. The range of BYD Dolphin is impressive considering its competition.

Features and Safety

The BYD Dolphin is equipped with a 5 inch driver display and a 12.8 inch central floating display. The best thing about the BYD Dolphin is that it also comes with phyicial switches that are most important like fan speed, drive modes, AC, heating etc. Kudos to BYD for keeping physical buttons! The seats are stitched with Vegan leather having 6 way adjustments for driver and 4 way adjustment to the co-passenger with ventilated and heated seats. The panaromic sunroof adds more light to the interiors. The BYD Dolphin has plenty of storage spaces thanks to long wheel base and e-Platform that adds good leg room too at the back. The BYD Dolphin comes with 60:40 split allowing the boot space to increase from 345 litres to 1310 litres. Addition to this one can connect to the BYD Dolphin with Apple Car Play and Andriod Auto with ease. Also the BYD Dolphin is equipped with BYD's intelligent voice command module. The BYD Dolphin has achieved 5 star safety rating in the NCAP in 2023. Therefore the BYD Dolphin is not at all compromised on the safety side offering all safety features across all variants. One can use the BYD Dolphin as a mobile power generator for electral devices upto 3.3 kW (like speakers, projectors etc.), making a perfect companion for outdoor picnics.

Pricing and Availability

Currently the BYD Dolphin is available on sale in several international markets including Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, Malaysia, Japan, Indonesia and Brazil. It is expected to be launched in India by end of 2025 at the price of Rs. 15 lakhs (ex-showroom) for base variant. Currently in Germany the price of BYD Dolphin is staring from €32,990 goes upto €35,990. From the price perspective its a quite on the upper bracket however local or manufacturing locally would bring the costs the down for sure. Currently BYD is importing their vehicles from China. However we will try to post a review once we have the vehicle available to us.

Summary

The BYD Dolphin is a combination of technology, stylish design and eco-friendly features can make it a game changer for BYD to serve the gap of entry level EV's. However countries are charging heavy taxes on Chinese EV's to be fair with the local manufacturers. We can say that the BYD Dolphin is a great package for an EV enthusiast or a first time EV buyer.
